July 28-30

While in Salzburg, the Traveling Foursome hit the major sites - the Sound of Music tour, the Salt mines, Augustiner beer hall, an opera, and the Hohen-somethingerother Fortress
The Gazebo where Leisel sang "I am sixteen, going on seventeen" This was used as the back of the Von Trapp house in the movie.  The kids fell into the lake in the movie Same house but with some hot guy in the picture.
We met up with two other students from Innsbruck for the Sound of Music (SOM) tour.  Although it rained during the tour, we had a good time and sang all of the songs.
Julie Andrews ("Maria") skipped down this tree-lined lane singing "I have confidence" The kids hung from these trees in their curtain-like outfits.  We need to compare the tree size now to the tree size 42 years ago when the movie was made. Edelweiss

Typical Austria House with a View
notice the flower pots on the porches
Salzkammergut Lakes - just one of many.  Too bad it was cloudy and rainy, but still beautiful

Mike was trying to be artistic with the use of focus in the two flower/statue pictures to left
In the Maribel Garden (filmed in the Do Re Mi scenes)
After the SOM tour, we headed on a tour of the Salt Mine near Salzburg (Salz means salt in German.  Burg means fortress or castle)  Salz was called White Gold back then as it was worth the same as gold.  Had to keep the meat fresh somehow.  The mine we toured was one of the oldest in the world and only stopped being used in the last 30 years (if I remember correctly)
To tour the mines, we dressed in cute little outfits to protect our clothing Why Andrew is in every one of these pictures is beyond me. Andrew the Ham

The Salt mine actually goes past the border of Austria and Germany, so we literally walked "under" the border.   Only Mike's family will have any idea why this picture is on here.  MDAC - remember this thing behind the TV on Oakland?

After two tours, we were ready for some Austria refreshment.  Augustiner is a beer made by monks (or at least it was).  Monks started brewing beer in the 1500's or 1600's Gwen shows off her muscles.  They were full at the time After the beer hall, we went to see an outdoor opera (the opera was indoors, but filmed and shown on a screen for the poor folk who can't shell our 1000 Euros to get inside.  Nice view of the Fortress from our seats tho.
Day Two (Sunday) - Mike and Steve venture out early to check out the Fortress.  Andrew and Gwen took a bike ride through Salzburg and got lost.  But we met up on the train.
This is the Fortress high up on the hill This is one of the many views from the top of the fortress Mike and Steve pose on the way down

Steve shows off the size of the picnic tables in the fortress.  Some of those are 2x24 boards, with 4x4 legs Another church that we called the Jello Church yet another one
There were many more pictures that were taken this weekend, but this should give you a glimpse of what we did in Salzburg - our last travel weekend during summer school.
